Growing up, I was always the overweight kid in class. I constantly got made fun of and bullied simply because I weighed more than kids my age. I just ignored it as if there was no problem and went on with life. Sometimes it was hard to ignore, but I was able to get through high school and go onto college with little to no problems. Elementary and middle school was the worst for me.
Fast forward to January 2013. After a couple months before, we did simple workouts at the gym at our apartment complex, my roommate and I decided it was best to join Planet Fitness! I mean, shoot, what's there to lose? $20 a month to workout at any gym across the US. Couldn't really beat that, as I was just starting off and didn't want to commit to a big contract. I had a friend of mine come up with a workout routine that best fit the gym I went to and came up with a good eating plan and what foods to eat and not to eat.
Fast forward another couple months. March comes around and I start seeing some results as do other people around me. This was great! The weird thing was is that I wasn't really eating healthy. I was starting my new job at Chipotle and was eating their food practically every day. Summer 2013 came around and I was definitely not at where I wanted to be. I was depressed, down, still fat, and sad. I thought to myself...how could one work so hard in the gym and never see results? DIET!
After being let go from Chipotle in late Summer 2013 and was home for about 3 weeks, I decided it was time not to make a temporary change, but to make a lifestyle change. This is when I started to prepare my meals for the week! Boy was this a ridiculous pain in my butt. 6 hours on Sundays was spent prepping all my meals for the week. At first I told myself there was no way I could continue with this, but over the weeks, I learned short cuts and different recipes that took no time at all to prep. This is when I started to see change. I was dropping weight like no other! Unfortunately around late October, early November, I was slacking and not really prepping healthy meals. I would get lazy and tired of doing it. I tried the low carb phase (SO DAMN EXPENSIVE!), I tried If It Fits Your Macros (but the sad part was that I never counted my calories and macros...I thought they would count themselves haha), and various other diets and ways of eating. This is when I finally made the switch from Planet Fitness to the Golds Gym in downtown Charlotte.
The end of November rolled around and my family's Christmas cruise was in a month and I was getting super nervous that I wouldn't be losing any weight! This was also the time I was getting my wisdom teeth pulled out, so I thought with that happening, I wouldn't be able to eat a lot, thus helping me lose weight. NOPE, of course I was a lucky guy and was able to eat day 2 of recovery. DAMN! The cruise came around and I just wasn't happy. I was still fat, overweight, and scared to take my shirt off. I got over that and just went with the flow. Shoot, I would probably not see any of these people after this anyways, so why not just enjoy the time there.
At this time, I am about 30 pounds down from 263, which was my starting weight in January. I went from a size 40/42 waist to fitting into 36/38s, which made it a lot easier to shop! I went from wearing XXL t-shirts and dress shirts down to XL and in some cases even larges! Now its February and I sit down and look back. Yes, I had made tremendous progress, but I have hit a plateau around the 235 pound mark and can not for the life of me get over it! If I would have eaten healthy and taken the time to actually count calories, I could probably be where I want to be, but life is not about making excuses! Its about looking forward and living the present!
